Model answer

(a) Zerubbabel, Jeshua and the heads of families refused: "You have nothing to do with us in building a house to our God" (Ezra 4:3).
They said they alone would build it, as King Cyrus commanded (Ezra 4:3).
The people of the land discouraged the people of Judah and made them afraid to build (Ezra 4:4).
They hired counsellors against them to frustrate their purpose through the reign of Cyrus until Darius (Ezra 4:5).
In the reign of Ahasuerus they wrote an accusation (Ezra 4:6).
Rehum and Shimshai wrote to Artaxerxes that Jerusalem was a rebellious city that would stop paying tribute (Ezra 4:8-16).
The king ordered the work stopped (Ezra 4:17-22).
They forced the Jews to stop until the second year of Darius (Ezra 4:23-24).
(b) Any four: land and boundary disputes; gossip; jealousy; noise and disturbance; children's quarrels; religious or ethnic differences; unpaid debts.
