WAEC Mathematics 1997 Question 15

Question 15

Latitude and Longitude

Two points P and Q are on longitude 67°W. Their latitudes differ by 90°. Calculate their distance apart in terms of π. (Take radius of the earth = 6400km).

  1. A.6400πkm
  2. B.6400km/π
  3. C.3200πkm
  4. D.3200km
  5. E.3200km/π
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: C (3200πkm)

Explanation

On the same longitude the points lie on a great circle: distance = 90/360 × 2π × 6400 = 3200π km.
