WAEC Mathematics 1997 Question 14

Question 14

Triangles and Quadrilaterals

In the triangle XYZ, XM is the altitude from X to YZ. XY = 13cm, XZ = 15cm and YM = 5cm. Find the length of YZ

Diagram for this question
  1. A.9cm
  2. B.12cm
  3. C.14cm
  4. D.19.85cm
  5. E.23cm
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: C (14cm)

Explanation

XM = √(132 − 52) = 12 cm, so MZ = √(152 − 122) = 9 cm. YZ = 5 + 9 = 14 cm.
