Model answer

Jack Absolute courts Lydia disguised as poor Ensign Beverley because she wants a romantic, penniless lover.
Sir Anthony and Mrs Malaprop arrange for Lydia to marry Captain Absolute, not knowing he is Beverley.
Mrs Malaprop writes as 'Delia' to Sir Lucius O'Trigger, who believes Delia is Lydia.
Bob Acres challenges Beverley to a duel without knowing he is his friend Jack.
These confusions create comedy, dramatic irony and the climax at the duel.
When identities are revealed, the misunderstandings are cleared and the lovers are united.
The theme also mocks pretence and romantic illusions.
