(a) African countries produce similar primary goods; Nigeria needs manufactured goods and machinery from industrial countries; poor transport links within Africa; colonial ties with Britain and Europe; different currencies and trade barriers in Africa; foreign countries have strong currencies and buying power; preference for foreign goods; political instability in some African countries.
(b) Diversify and specialise production; remove tariffs and trade barriers (ECOWAS, African Union); build trans-African roads and railways; adopt a common currency; promote common languages; protect and patronise African goods; improve technology and add value to exports; political stability.
