Theory question 107
Pentecost and the Early Church(a) Give an account of how the prophecy of Joel was fulfilled on the day of Pentecost. (b) In what two ways was the above incident significant?
Show the model answer
(a) On the day of Pentecost the disciples were together (Acts 2:1).
A sound like a rushing wind filled the house (Acts 2:2).
Tongues as of fire rested on each of them (Acts 2:3).
They were filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke in other tongues (Acts 2:4).
Jews from every nation heard them in their own languages; some mocked that they were drunk (Acts 2:5-13).
Peter said they were not drunk; this was what Joel spoke: "I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh… your sons and daughters shall prophesy" (Acts 2:14-18; Joel 2:28-29).
Wonders in heaven and signs on earth; whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved (Acts 2:19-21).
He preached Christ crucified and risen; about three thousand were baptised (Acts 2:22-41).
(b) Any two: birth of the church; disciples empowered to witness boldly; fulfilment of Jesus' promise; the gospel reached many nations; gifts of the Spirit for all believers.
Narrate Acts 2:1-41, then two points.
