Triumphal Entry and Cleansing of the Temple(a) Highlight the story of the cleansing of the Temple in the Gospel of Matthew. (b) In what two ways is the Church defiled today?
Show the model answer
(a) After the triumphal entry Jesus entered the temple of God (Matthew 21:10-12).
He drove out all who sold and bought in the temple (Matthew 21:12).
He overturned the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those who sold pigeons (Matthew 21:12).
He said, "My house shall be called a house of prayer; but you make it a den of robbers" (Matthew 21:13).
The blind and lame came to Him in the temple and He healed them (Matthew 21:14).
Children cried "Hosanna to the Son of David"; the chief priests and scribes were indignant (Matthew 21:15).
Jesus quoted, "Out of the mouth of babes… thou hast brought perfect praise" (Matthew 21:16).
He left the city and lodged at Bethany (Matthew 21:17).
(b) Any two: commercialisation — selling items and making money the focus; corruption and fraud among leaders; immorality; using the church for politics or tribalism; false miracles to deceive; misuse of church funds.
Narrate Matthew 21:12-17, then two ways.
