Theory question 111
Civic Responsibility(a) Give Paul's teaching on "dignity of labour" in Thessalonians. (b) What four lessons can be derived from this teaching?
Show the model answer
(a) Live quietly, mind your own affairs and work with your hands (1 Thessalonians 4:11).
So that you may command the respect of outsiders and be dependent on nobody (1 Thessalonians 4:12).
Keep away from any brother who is living in idleness (2 Thessalonians 3:6).
Paul worked night and day so as not to be a burden, to give an example (2 Thessalonians 3:7-9).
"If any one will not work, let him not eat" (2 Thessalonians 3:10).
Busybodies must work quietly and earn their own living (2 Thessalonians 3:11-12).
Do not be weary in well-doing; warn the idle as brothers (2 Thessalonians 3:13-15).
(b) Any four: all honest work is honourable; laziness is sinful; Christians should be self-reliant; leaders should set an example; work earns respect; avoid gossip and busybody behaviour; idleness leads to poverty; the church should discipline the idle with love.
Outline Paul's teaching, then four lessons.
