Model answer

(a) Abner made peace with David at Hebron and left in peace (2 Samuel 3:20-21).
Joab, returning, took Abner aside at the gate and killed him to avenge his brother Asahel (2 Samuel 3:26-27).
When David heard it, he said he and his kingdom were guiltless before the Lord for the blood of Abner (2 Samuel 3:28).
He cursed Joab and his father's house (2 Samuel 3:29).
He commanded Joab and all the people to tear their clothes, put on sackcloth and mourn (2 Samuel 3:31).
King David followed the bier and wept aloud at the grave in Hebron (2 Samuel 3:31-32).
He lamented: "Should Abner die as a fool dies?" (2 Samuel 3:33-34).
He refused to eat until sunset (2 Samuel 3:35).
All the people saw he had no part in the killing and it pleased them (2 Samuel 3:36-37).
He called Abner "a prince and a great man" and said the Lord would repay the evildoer (2 Samuel 3:38-39).
(b) Any two: revenge is wrong; leaders should show sincere sympathy; honour others even former enemies; innocence should be shown publicly; leave vengeance to God.

Explanation

Narrate 2 Samuel 3:26-39, then two lessons.
