Model answer

(a) Solomon went to Gibeon, the great high place, and offered a thousand burnt offerings (1 Kings 3:4).
The Lord appeared to him in a dream by night and said, "Ask what I shall give you" (1 Kings 3:5).
Solomon thanked God for His steadfast love to David and for making him king (1 Kings 3:6-7).
He said he was but a little child who did not know how to go out or come in, among a great people (1 Kings 3:7-8).
He asked for an understanding mind to govern the people and discern between good and evil (1 Kings 3:9).
God was pleased that he had not asked for long life, riches or the life of his enemies (1 Kings 3:10-11).
God gave him a wise and discerning mind unlike any before or after (1 Kings 3:12).
He also gave him riches and honour, and long life if he walked in God's ways (1 Kings 3:13-14).
(b) Any two: it was unselfish, for the good of the people; it showed humility; it put God's work first; wisdom is needed for good leadership and justice; it pleased God.

Explanation

Narrate 1 Kings 3:4-15, then two reasons.
