JAMB Physics 1993 Question 2

Question 2

Measurement and Units

The external and internal diameters of a tube are measured as (32 ± 2)mm and (21 ± 1)mm respectively. Determine the percentage error in the thickness of the tube.

  1. A.27%
  2. B.14%
  3. C.9%
  4. D.3%
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: A (27%)

Explanation

Thickness = (32 − 21)/2 = 5.5 mm. The errors add: (2 + 1)/2 = 1.5 mm. Percentage error = 1.5/5.5 × 100 ≈ 27%.
