JAMB Physics 1978 Question 6

Question 6

Density and Upthrust

An ice cube floats in a glass of water filled to the brim. What happens when the ice melts?

  1. A.The water level remains the same
  2. B.There is a drop in the level of water in the glass due to condensation on its outside
  3. C.The water in the glass overflows
  4. D.The level of water drops because melted ice occupies less volume.
  5. E.None of the above is correct.
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: A (The water level remains the same)

Explanation

A floating ice cube displaces its own weight of water. When it melts it becomes exactly that much water, which fills the space it was displacing, so the level does not change.
