Question 26

Bearings

A ship sails a distance of 50km in the direction S50°E and then sails the distance of 50km in the direction N40°E. Find the bearing of the ship from its original position.

  1. A.S90°E
  2. B.N40°E
  3. C.S95°E
  4. D.N85°E
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: D (N85°E)

Explanation

The two legs (bearings 130° and 040°) are at right angles and equal, so the direct line makes 45° with the first leg. Its bearing is 130° − 45° = 085°, i.e. N85°E.
