JAMB Mathematics 1993 Question 15

Question 15

Quadratic Equations

Solve the following equation (3x − 2)(5x − 4) = (3x − 2)2

  1. A.−⅔, 1
  2. B.1
  3. C.⅔, 1
  4. D.⅔, ⅘
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: C (⅔, 1)

Explanation

Bring everything to one side: (3x − 2)[(5x − 4) − (3x − 2)] = (3x − 2)(2x − 2) = 0. So x = ⅔ or x = 1. Don't divide by (3x − 2), or you lose a root.
