Question 12

Indices

What are the values of y which satisfy the equation 9y − 4 × 3y + 3 = 0?

  1. A.−1 and 0
  2. B.−1 and 1
  3. C.1 and 3
  4. D.0 and 1.
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: D (0 and 1.)

Explanation

Let x = 3y: x² − 4x + 3 = 0, so x = 1 or 3. Then 3y = 1 gives y = 0 and 3y = 3 gives y = 1.
