JAMB Mathematics 1984 Question 47

Question 47

Triangles and Quadrilaterals

XYZ is a triangle and XW is perpendicular to YZ at W. If XZ = 5cm and WZ = 4cm, calculate XY.

Diagram for this question
  1. A.5√3cm
  2. B.3√5cm
  3. C.3√3cm
  4. D.5cm
  5. E.6cm.
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: B (3√5cm)

Explanation

XW = √(5² − 4²) = 3cm and YW = 10 − 4 = 6cm. XY = √(6² + 3²) = √45 = 3√5cm.
