JAMB Chemistry 1999 Question 21

Question 21

Solubility and Solutions

From the diagram above, the mass of crystals deposited when 1 dm3 of a saturated solution of NaCl is cooled from 80°C to 60°C is [Na = 23, Cl = 35.5].

Diagram for this question
  1. A.117.00 g
  2. B.58.50 g
  3. C.11.70 g
  4. D.5.85 g
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: A (117.00 g)

Explanation

From the graph the solubility falls by about 2 mol dm−3 between 80°C and 60°C. So 2 mol of NaCl crystallizes from 1 dm3: 2 × 58.5 = 117 g.
