JAMB Chemistry 1993 Question 22

Question 22

Electrolysis

During the electrolysis of a salt of a metal M, a current of 0.5 A flows for 32 minutes 10 seconds and deposits 0.325 g of M. What is the charge of the metal ion? [M = 65, 1F = 96,500 C per mole of electron]

  1. A.1
  2. B.2
  3. C.3
  4. D.4
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: B (2)

Explanation

Q = 0.5 × 1930 s = 965 C = 0.01 mol of electrons. Moles of M = 0.325/65 = 0.005 mol, so each ion took 0.01/0.005 = 2 electrons: the charge is +2.
