WAEC Mathematics 2015 Question 15

Question 15

Mensuration of Solids

The dimensions of a rectangular tank are 2 m by 7 m by 11 m. If its volume is equal to that of a cylindrical tank of height 4cm, calculate the base radius of the cylindrical tank. [Take π = 22/7]

  1. A.14 m
  2. B.7 m
  3. C.3½ m
  4. D.1¾ m
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: C (3½ m)

Explanation

Volume = 2 × 7 × 11 = 154 m³. 22/7 × r² × 4 = 154 gives r² = 12.25, so r = 3½ m (the height must be 4 m).
