WAEC Mathematics 2011 Question 7

Question 7

Linear and Simultaneous Equations

Solve the equations: 3x − 2y = 7, x + 2y = −3

  1. A.x = 1, y = −2
  2. B.x = 1, y = 3
  3. C.x = 2, y = −1
  4. D.x = 4, y = −3
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: A (x = 1, y = −2)

Explanation

Adding the equations: 4x = 4, so x = 1. Then 1 + 2y = −3 gives y = −2.
