Question 29

Measures of Central Tendency

The table shows the ages (in years) of twenty children chosen at random from a community.
Age (years): 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
Number of children: 2, 3, 5, 6, 4
What is the median of the distribution?

  1. A.3.5 years
  2. B.3.0 years
  3. C.2.5 years
  4. D.2.0 years
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: A (3.5 years)

Explanation

With 20 children the median is the average of the 10th and 11th ages. Cumulative frequencies 2, 5, 10, 16: the 10th is 3 and the 11th is 4, so the median is 3.5 years.
