Theory question 105
Data PresentationThe Table shows the number of suitcases possessed by a group of travellers
No. of suitcases: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
Travellers: 2, 7, 7, 2, 3, 9
(a) Calculate the (i) median (ii) mean, correct to the nearest whole number (b) Draw a bar chart to represent the information
Show the model answer
Model answer
There are 30 travellers.
(a)(i) The median is between the 15th and 16th; cumulative frequencies 2, 9, 16…, so both have 2 suitcases: median = 2.
(ii) Σfx = 0 + 7 + 14 + 6 + 12 + 45 = 84; mean = 84/30 = 2.8 ≈ 3.
(b) Bars of equal width, separated by gaps, with heights 2, 7, 7, 2, 3, 9 above 0–5 suitcases; label both axes.
Explanation
The median of 30 values is the average of the 15th and 16th.
