WAEC Mathematics 2002 Question 13

Question 13

Bearings

Points X, Y and Z are located in the same horizontal plane such that Y is 12 km north of X and Z is on a bearing of 270° from X. If |XZ| = 6km, calculate, correct to one decimal place, |YZ|

  1. A.18km
  2. B.13.4km
  3. C.13km
  4. D.10.4 km
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: B (13.4km)

Explanation

Z is due west of X and Y due north, so the angle at X is 90°: YZ = √(122 + 62) = √180 ≈ 13.4 km.
