WAEC Mathematics 1997 Question 9

Question 9

Linear and Simultaneous Equations

Solve the equations: 4x − y = 11, 5x + 2y = 4

  1. A.x = 6, y = 13
  2. B.x = −2, y = −3
  3. C.x = −2, y = 3
  4. D.x = 2, y = −3
  5. E.x = 2, y = 3
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: D (x = 2, y = −3)

Explanation

Double the first equation (8x − 2y = 22) and add the second: 13x = 26, so x = 2; then y = 4(2) − 11 = −3.
