Question 17

Quadratic Equations

The roots of a quadratic equation are −¼ and 3. The quadratic equation is

  1. A.4x2 − 13x − 3 = 0
  2. B.4x2 − 11x − 3 = 0
  3. C.4x2 + 11x − 3 = 0
  4. D.3x2 + 11x − 3 = 0
  5. E.3x2 − 11x + 3 = 0
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: B (4x2 − 11x − 3 = 0)

Explanation

x = −¼ gives the factor (4x + 1) and x = 3 gives (x − 3). (4x + 1)(x − 3) = 4x2 − 11x − 3.
