WAEC Mathematics 1996 Question 12

Question 12

Variation

M varies directly as n and inversely as the square of p. If M = 3, when n = 2 and p = 1, find M in terms of n and p.

  1. A.M = 2n/(3p)
  2. B.M = 3n2/(2p2)
  3. C.M = n2/(2p)
  4. D.M = 3n/(2p2)
  5. E.M = 2n/(3p2)
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: D (M = 3n/(2p2))

Explanation

M = kn/p2. Putting M = 3, n = 2, p = 1 gives 3 = 2k, so k = 3/2 and M = 3n/(2p2).
