Merits (any three): helped end colonialism and apartheid (support for liberation movements in Angola, Zimbabwe, Namibia, South Africa); gave Nigeria leadership and prestige in Africa; promoted peace through ECOMOG and AU missions; promoted economic co-operation via ECOWAS; aid to African states (Technical Aid Corps).
Demerits (any three): huge cost in money and lives with little return; neglect of Nigeria's own domestic needs; ingratitude of some beneficiary states, and xenophobic attacks on Nigerians; neglect of relations with developed countries; distrust by neighbours who fear Nigeria's domination.
