Theory question 102

Power, Authority, Legitimacy and Sovereignty

Identify six external limitations to the exercise of sovereignty of the State.

Show the model answer
Model answer

Any six: international law; treaties and agreements the state has signed; membership of international organisations (UN, AU, ECOWAS, Commonwealth); diplomatic immunity of foreign envoys; dependence on foreign aid and loans (IMF, World Bank); economic interdependence and foreign trade; pressure from powerful states; geographical location (e.g. landlocked states); international public opinion; military alliances.

Explanation

External limits come from outside the state; internal ones like the constitution don't count here.
