Theory question 302

Statistical Maps and Diagrams

The Table F below shows the number of students who gained admission into three Nursing Training Schools from the years 2001 to 2003.
Table F
Nursing Training School A: 2001 - 40; 2002 - 60; 2003 - 50
Nursing Training School B: 2001 - 50; 2002 - 40; 2003 - 40
Nursing Training School C: 2001 - 60; 2002 - 30; 2003 - 40
(a) Represent the data in Table F with a compound bar graph, using the years as the base of the graph (x-axis) and a scale of 2 cm to 20 students on the vertical axis (y-axis). (b) Calculate: (i) the number of students who gained admission into Nursing Training School A for the entire period; (ii) the number of students who gained admission into the three Nursing Training Schools in the year 2003; (iii) the difference in enrolment between students who gained admission into Nursing Training Schools A and C for the entire period. (c) Outline one major difference between a simple bar chart and a compound bar chart.

Model answer

(a) Three bars for 2001, 2002 and 2003, of equal width and spacing. Totals: 2001 = 150 (bar 15 cm), 2002 = 130 (13 cm), 2003 = 130 (13 cm). Each bar divided cumulatively: 2001 A 0-40, B 40-90, C 90-150; 2002 A 0-60, B 60-100, C 100-130; 2003 A 0-50, B 50-90, C 90-130. Different shading for each school with a key, labelled axes and a title.
(b)(i) 40 + 60 + 50 = 150 students.
(ii) 50 + 40 + 40 = 130 students.
(iii) A = 150, C = 60 + 30 + 40 = 130; difference = 20 students.
(c) A simple bar shows only one value (item) per bar, while a compound bar is divided into parts to show several components and their total in one bar.

Explanation

Stack the values cumulatively.
