Theory question 302

Statistical Maps and Diagrams

The data below shows the number of farmers who cultivated the underlisted crops in Ajok Region from 2005 to 2007.
2005: Cassava 50; Maize 60; Rice 45; Yam 80
2006: Cassava 40; Maize 62; Rice 55; Yam 48
2007: Cassava 48; Maize 58; Rice 70; Yam 35
(a) Draw a divided bar graph to represent the data. (b) Calculate the number of farmers who cultivated rice from 2005 to 2007. (c) What is the major difference between simple bar graph and the component/divided bar graph?

Model answer

(a) Totals: 2005 = 235; 2006 = 205; 2007 = 211. Draw one bar per year with heights to a scale (e.g. 1 cm = 20 farmers), each divided into cassava, maize, rice and yam in the same order, with cumulative values (2005: 50, 110, 155, 235; 2006: 40, 102, 157, 205; 2007: 48, 106, 176, 211); equal bar widths and gaps, shading key, title and labelled axes.
(b) 45 + 55 + 70 = 170 farmers.
(c) A simple bar graph shows only one value (the total) per bar, while a divided bar graph splits each bar into components showing how the total is made up.

Explanation

Keep the order of the crops the same in every bar.
