Statistical Maps and Diagrams

The table below shows the quantity of yams (in kg) produced by four yam producing states in Nigeria between 1995 and 1998.
Table 1 - Quantity of yams in kilograms produced between 1995 and 1998
State A: 1995 300,000; 1996 400,000; 1997 500,000; 1998 600,000
State B: 500,000; 500,000; 600,000; 700,000
State C: 600,000; 700,000; 800,000; 800,000
State D: 700,000; 600,000; 500,000; 400,000
Use the table to answer the following questions (a) Calculate the total quantity of yams produced in the four states during the period (1995-1998) (b) Construct a pie-chart to show the quantity of yams produced by each state in 1998 (c) State two advantages of a pie-chart

Model answer

(a) A 1,800,000; B 2,300,000; C 2,900,000; D 2,200,000; grand total 9,200,000 kg.
(b) 1998 total = 2,500,000 kg. Angles: A 600,000/2,500,000 × 360° = 86.4°; B 100.8°; C 115.2°; D 57.6° (total 360°). Draw a circle, mark sectors with a protractor, label each state, give a title and key.
(c) Easy to compare parts of a whole; shows each share at a glance; simple to draw and understand; attractive.

Explanation

Check that the four angles add up to 360°.
