Theory question 105
Transport, Trade and TourismCompare and contrast the trade relations between Nigeria and the United Kingdom with that between Nigeria and Japan
Show the model answer
Similarities: in both, Nigeria exports mainly primary products (crude oil, cocoa, rubber) and imports manufactured goods; trade is by sea; both are major trading partners
United Kingdom: long historical/colonial ties, common language and institutions; wider range of imports (machinery, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, food, drinks); UK buys oil, cocoa, palm kernel, rubber, timber; balance often closer; UK banks and companies long established in Nigeria; shorter sea route (South Atlantic)
Japan: newer trading partner; imports dominated by vehicles, electronics, machinery, steel products; Japan buys relatively little from Nigeria (some crude oil, cotton), so Nigeria usually has a trade deficit with Japan; longer route (Cape route); no colonial ties
Give both similarities and differences.
