(a) Isolated/dispersed farmstead – one or a few houses standing alone among farms; hamlet – a small cluster of houses with no services; village – many houses with a few shops, school, church/mosque, mainly farmers (also nucleated, linear and dispersed patterns)
(b) Rural areas supply food, raw materials and labour to towns; towns supply manufactured goods and services; towns are markets for rural produce; towns provide jobs, education, health care and administration; migrants send remittances back to villages
