WAEC Further Mathematics 2018 Question 14

Question 14

Sequences and Series

The general term of an infinite sequence 9, 4, −1, −6, … is ur = ar + b. Find the values of a and b.

  1. A.a = 5, b = 14
  2. B.a = −5, b = 14
  3. C.a = 5, b = −14
  4. D.a = −5, b = −14
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: B (a = −5, b = 14)

Explanation

u₁ = a + b = 9 and u₂ = 2a + b = 4 give a = −5, b = 14.
