WAEC Further Mathematics 2010 Question 18

Question 18

Polynomials

Find the axis of symmetry of the curve y = x2 − 4x − 12.

  1. A.x = −2
  2. B.y = 2
  3. C.x = 2
  4. D.y = 2
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: C (x = 2)

Explanation

The turning point is where dy/dx = 2x − 4 = 0, i.e. x = 2. The axis of symmetry is the vertical line x = 2.
