WAEC Further Mathematics 2008 Question 25

Question 25

Probability

The probability of Jide, Atu and Obu solving a given problem are 1/12, 1/6 and 1/8 respectively. Calculate the probability that only one of them solves the problem.

  1. A.1/576
  2. B.55/576
  3. C.77/576
  4. D.167/576
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: D (167/576)

Explanation

Add the three cases where exactly one solves it: (1/12)(5/6)(7/8) + (11/12)(1/6)(7/8) + (11/12)(5/6)(1/8) = (35 + 77 + 55)/576 = 167/576.
