Theory question 103

Information Transmission

Paper 2, Section A: Short-structured questions
(a) With the aid of well-labelled diagram, explain the following modes of information transmission: (i) simplex; (ii) half duplex; (iii) full duplex. (b) State one example of: (i) simplex; (ii) half duplex; (iii) full duplex, mode of information transmission. (c) Name one component of a data communication system.

Show the model answer
Model answer

(a)(i) Simplex – data flows in one direction only, from sender to receiver (Sender → Receiver).
(ii) Half duplex – data can flow both ways, but only one way at a time (Sender ⇄ Receiver, taking turns).
(iii) Full duplex – data flows both ways at the same time (two arrows in opposite directions at once).
(b)(i) Radio or TV broadcast (or keyboard to computer). (ii) Walkie-talkie. (iii) Telephone/mobile phone call.
