(a) State five reasons why road transport would be preferred to rail transport.

(a) Any five: door-to-door delivery; flexible routes and time – no fixed timetable; faster over short distances; good for perishable and urgent goods; reaches places where there are no rail lines; many types of vehicles available; less handling, so less damage and pilferage; cheaper for small loads and short distances; easier to load and offload.
(b) Any five: builds, develops and maintains airports; provides air traffic control/navigation aids (at the time); provides passenger and cargo terminals and facilities; ensures safety and security at airports; provides fire-fighting and rescue services; collects airport charges and taxes; provides warehouses for cargo and car parks; regulates the use of airport facilities by airlines and others; trains staff.
