(a) Pillars of democracy are the institutions and principles on which democracy rests and without which it cannot survive, e.g. constitution, rule of law, independent judiciary, free press, political parties, civil society, armed forces.
(b) The Armed Forces (Army, Navy, Air Force) defend Nigeria's territory and democratic order; they remain under civilian control (the President is Commander-in-Chief); they aid civil authority in emergencies; they must stay out of politics, protect the constitution and not overthrow elected governments.
(c) Any three:
Informs and educates citizens.
Exposes corruption and abuse of power.
Provides a platform for public opinion and debate.
Holds government accountable.
Monitors elections.
