Theory question 106
Parables of Jesus(a) Outline the parables of the lost sheep and the lost coin. (b) In what two ways are these parables significant?
Show the model answer
(a) Tax collectors and sinners drew near; the Pharisees and scribes grumbled that Jesus received sinners (Luke 15:1-2).
Lost sheep: a man with a hundred sheep who loses one leaves the ninety-nine and seeks the lost one until he finds it (Luke 15:4).
He lays it on his shoulders rejoicing, calls friends and neighbours to rejoice with him (Luke 15:5-6).
So there is more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous who need no repentance (Luke 15:7).
Lost coin: a woman with ten silver coins who loses one lights a lamp, sweeps the house and seeks diligently until she finds it (Luke 15:8).
She calls her friends and neighbours to rejoice with her (Luke 15:9).
There is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents (Luke 15:10).
(b) Any two: God loves and seeks the lost; every person is valuable to God; heaven rejoices over repentance; Christians should seek and welcome sinners; do not despise sinners like the Pharisees.
Outline Luke 15:1-10, then two points.
