Model answer

(a) In the sixth month Gabriel was sent to Nazareth to a virgin named Mary, betrothed to Joseph of the house of David (Luke 1:26-27).
He said, "Hail, O favoured one, the Lord is with you!"; she was troubled (Luke 1:28-29).
He said, "Do not be afraid, Mary… you will conceive and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus" (Luke 1:30-31).
He will be great, the Son of the Most High, and reign over Jacob's house for ever (Luke 1:32-33).
Mary asked, "How shall this be, since I have no husband?" (Luke 1:34).
The Holy Spirit would come upon her; the child would be called holy, the Son of God (Luke 1:35).
Her kinswoman Elizabeth had conceived in old age, for with God nothing is impossible (Luke 1:36-37).
Mary said, "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word"; the angel departed (Luke 1:38).
(b) Any two: humility — she called herself the Lord's handmaid; obedience and submission to God's will; faith in God's word; purity — she asked how, since she had no husband; readiness to serve God whatever the cost.
