Theory question 103
The Covenant(a) Why was a new covenant established during the time of Jeremiah? (b) State two consequences faced by the Israelites for breaking God's covenant.
Show the model answer
(a) Israel and Judah broke the covenant God made with their fathers when He brought them out of Egypt (Jeremiah 31:32; 11:10).
They turned to other gods and did not obey His voice (Jeremiah 11:10-13).
The old covenant was written on stone, but their hearts remained stubborn and sinful (Jeremiah 17:1, 9).
God therefore promised a new covenant: He would put His law within them and write it on their hearts (Jeremiah 31:31-33).
All would know the Lord personally, from least to greatest (Jeremiah 31:34).
He would forgive their iniquity and remember their sin no more (Jeremiah 31:34).
Each person would be responsible for his own sin (Jeremiah 31:29-30).
(b) Any two: invasion by Babylon and destruction of Jerusalem and the temple (2 Kings 25:8-10); exile to Babylon (Jeremiah 25:11); famine, sword and pestilence (Jeremiah 14:12); loss of king and kingdom (2 Kings 25:7); the land left desolate.
Explain why the old covenant failed and the new one's features, then two consequences.
