Theory question 102
The Supremacy of GodWhy did Elijah pronounce drought on Israel and how did Ahab react to this? What lessons about the supremacy of God do we learn from this event?
Show the model answer
Ahab son of Omri did more evil than all before him (1 Kings 16:30).
He married Jezebel, daughter of the Sidonian king, served Baal and built an altar and house for Baal in Samaria and an Asherah (1 Kings 16:31-33).
Elijah the Tishbite told Ahab there would be neither dew nor rain except by his word, to show that the Lord, not Baal, controls rain (1 Kings 17:1).
Ahab's reaction: he searched every nation for Elijah to kill him (1 Kings 18:10).
Jezebel killed the prophets of the Lord (1 Kings 18:4, 13).
Ahab sent Obadiah to search for grass to save the animals (1 Kings 18:5-6).
When they met he called Elijah "you troubler of Israel"; Elijah said Ahab and his father's house troubled Israel by forsaking the Lord and following the Baals (1 Kings 18:17-18).
Ahab agreed to gather Israel and the prophets of Baal at Mount Carmel (1 Kings 18:19-20).
Lessons: God controls nature, rain and drought; idols are powerless; God punishes idolatry; God protects and provides for His servants (ravens, widow of Zarephath, 1 Kings 17); God's prophets must speak boldly.
Give the reason (Ahab's idolatry), his reaction, then lessons.
