Theory question 101
Cell Structure and Organisation(a)(i) Make a labelled drawing of a typical plant cell to show its essential features (ii) Give the functions of two labelled organelles
(b) Describe briefly two levels of cell organization in living organisms giving an example of each type.
(c) What role do the following processes play in the activities of a living cell? (i) osmosis; (ii) diffusion?
Show the model answer
(a)(i) Drawing with title and labels: cellulose cell wall, cell membrane, cytoplasm, large central vacuole with tonoplast, nucleus (nuclear membrane, nucleolus), chloroplasts, mitochondria
(ii) Any two: nucleus – controls cell activities and carries genes; chloroplast – photosynthesis; mitochondrion – respiration/energy (ATP); cell wall – support and shape; vacuole – stores cell sap, keeps cell turgid
(b) Any two: cell level (e.g. Amoeba, Chlamydomonas); tissue – group of similar cells with one function (e.g. xylem, muscle); organ – tissues working together (e.g. leaf, heart); system – organs working together (e.g. digestive system, root system)
(c)(i) Osmosis: water uptake by root hairs and cell-to-cell movement of water; keeps cells turgid for support
(ii) Diffusion: gaseous exchange (O₂ in, CO₂ out), absorption of digested food, removal of wastes
Label lines must be straight and must not cross; give the diagram a title.
