Theory question 106
Crop Improvement(a) State six aims of crop improvement.
(b) Explain briefly 'introduction' as a method of crop improvement
Show the model answer
(a) Any six: higher yield; resistance to pests and diseases; better quality (nutrient content, taste, storage); adaptation to climate and soil (e.g. drought tolerance); early maturity; uniform growth suitable for mechanisation; better response to fertilizer; resistance to lodging and shattering
(b) Introduction is bringing crop varieties or species from another area or country into a new area; the introduced plants are tested (acclimatised) under local conditions and the best are released to farmers or used for breeding. It is quick and cheap but may bring new pests/diseases and some may not adapt
Define introduction and say how it is carried out.
