JAMB Physics 2004 Question 5

Question 5

Refraction of Light

Calculate the angle of minimum deviation for a ray which is refracted through an equiangular prism of refractive index 1.4.

  1. A.29°
  2. B.60°
  3. C.99°
  4. D.90°
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: A (29°)

Explanation

n = sin((A + D)/2) ÷ sin(A/2): sin((60 + D)/2) = 1.4 × 0.5 = 0.7, so (60 + D)/2 = 44.4° and D ≈ 29°.
