JAMB Physics 2003 Question 1

Question 1

Friction

A bead travelling on a straight wire is brought to rest at 0.2m by friction. If the mass of the bead is 0.01kg and the coefficient of friction between the bead and the wire is 0.1, determine the work done by the friction. [g = 10ms−2]

  1. A.2 × 10−4J
  2. B.2 × 10−3J
  3. C.2 × 101J
  4. D.2 × 102 J
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: B (2 × 10−3J)

Explanation

Friction = μmg = 0.1 × 0.01 × 10 = 0.01 N; work = 0.01 × 0.2 = 2 × 10−3 J.
