JAMB Physics 1993 Question 10

Question 10

Pressure

A weightless vessel of dimensions 4m × 3m × 2m is filled with a liquid of density 1000 kg m−3 and sealed. What is the maximum pressure this container can exert on a flat surface? [g = 10 m s−2]

  1. A.9 × 104 N m−2
  2. B.4 × 104 N m−2
  3. C.3 × 104 N m−2
  4. D.2 × 104 N m−2
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: B (4 × 104 N m−2)

Explanation

Pressure is greatest when the vessel stands on its smallest face (3 m × 2 m), so the liquid is 4 m deep: p = hρg = 4 × 1000 × 10 = 4 × 104 N m−2.
