JAMB Physics 1990 Question 33

Question 33

Sound

A sonometer wire of length 100 cm under a tension of 10 N, has a frequency of 250 Hz. Keeping the length of the wire constant, the tension is adjusted to produce a new frequency of 350 Hz. The new tension is

  1. A.5.1 N
  2. B.7.1 N
  3. C.14.0 N
  4. D.19.6 N
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: D (19.6 N)

Explanation

f ∝ √T, so T2 = 10 × (350/250)² = 10 × 1.96 = 19.6 N.
