JAMB Physics 1989 Question 2

Question 2

Scalars and Vectors

The magnitude of the resultant of two mutually perpendicular forces, F1 and F2 is 13 N. If the magnitude of F1 is 5 N, what is the magnitude of F2?

  1. A.2.6 N
  2. B.8.0 N
  3. C.12.0 N
  4. D.18.0 N
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: C (12.0 N)

Explanation

For perpendicular forces 13² = 5² + F2², so F2 = √(169 − 25) = 12 N.
